About this place
Cold soba, small shrimp tempura and myoga for garnish: at Fujiya, diners who order a soba-and-rice-bowl set can enjoy the shrimp’s springy texture, crisp batter and soba cooked just right. It’s a satisfying combination when you want chilled noodles with tempura and a rice bowl on the side. One option pairs small shrimp tempura with grated daikon and a rice bowl of tuna with green onion and a soft-boiled egg. Choose whether to make soba the focus or add a rice dish as well.
For a more substantial rice bowl, there is also a set with Tajima chicken oyakodon—chicken and egg over rice—and zaru soba. The menu says the dish uses Kinrin Akasai eggs from Kyōtamba; one diner recalled the soft, creamy egg, full of savoury dashi. The soba in the oyakodon set can be served as either zaru or kake. Diners have also commented on how well the Kansai-style dashi goes with the soba. Depending on your mood, the meal might centre on a warm bowl of noodles or pair the rice bowl with cold soba.
If you would rather focus on soba, options include soba with Tajima chicken and green onion, duck tsuke seiro (chilled soba served with dipping broth), and kake. Tempura comes as a platter or as individual items, including large shrimp, maitake mushroom and aubergine, so you can choose according to your appetite and preferences.
For dinner, you can add small plates such as salt-grilled seseri chicken and dashimaki, a rolled omelette seasoned with dashi, and enjoy them with a drink. One diner who had the set course said the zaru soba served at the end went well with the drinks.
Fujiya is in the Abeno Chikagai underground shopping area, known as Ab Chika, and is described as suitable for solo meals. At lunchtime, consider a soba-and-rice-bowl set; in the evening, small dishes are also available. It may be easiest to choose your soba first, then decide whether to add a rice bowl or tempura.
